ASL Research History
There is a long history of women struggling with mental illnesses, but for a long time, it went unspoken, because it was very misunderstood. In the past, it was thought that these mental disorders were in some way considered sinning and that they were connected to the supernatural. Some mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are more likely to occur in women than they are in men, and there are even some that occur only in women. These mental illnesses are one of the most common contributors to the fact that “7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough”. The mission of The Letter Project is to “change their minds” and their message they aim to spread is “We believe in you. We believe in the power of women supporting one another. We are rooting for you from all around the world.” One in five women in the United States have experienced a mental health issue in the past year. There has been much research done recently on mental illnesses and have sparked a period of awareness especially within the youth community, and online. Specifically, the Women Supporting Women organization was formed to “awareness, education, and support to all those who are affected by breast cancer.” But this idea of Women Supporting Women has expanded into a revolution of women making conscious efforts to support women. This movement in my opinion is shaping my generation and future generations that women need to stick together and by each others’ sides. This is exactly what The Letter Project is encouraging, they urge people to write to women of all ages to support them and show them that they are not alone.
